What Is an Eating Disorder?

Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions characterized by unhealthy eating behaviors, distress related to food or body image, and concerns about weight or shape. These conditions are not a matter of willpower or personal choice. They develop from a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors.

Early diagnosis and treatment can improve both physical and emotional health and support long-term recovery.

Anorexia Nervosa

Restriction of food intake leading to significantly low body weight, often accompanied by an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted body image.

Types of Eating Disorders

Bulimia Nervosa

Recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by behaviors such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, fasting, or excessive exercise to prevent weight gain.

We evaluate and treat a variety of eating disorders, including:

Binge Eating Disorder

Recurrent episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food accompanied by feelings of loss of control, guilt, or shame, without regular compensatory behaviors.

Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED)

Eating disorder symptoms that cause significant distress or impairment but do not meet the full criteria for another specific eating disorder.

Common Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending on the type of eating disorder but may include:

  • Preoccupation with food, weight, calories, or body shape

  • Restrictive eating or skipping meals

  • Episodes of binge eating

  • Self-induced vomiting or misuse of laxatives or diuretics

  • Excessive exercise

  • Fear of gaining weight

  • Distorted body image

  • Rapid weight loss or significant weight changes

  • Dizziness, fatigue, or weakness

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Social withdrawal or avoiding meals with others

  • Anxiety or depression related to eating or body image

Our Evaluation Process

A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation helps identify eating disorders and any co-occurring mental health conditions. Your assessment may include:

  • A detailed psychiatric interview

  • Review of your medical, psychiatric, and family history

  • Assessment of eating behaviors and body image concerns

  • Evaluation of mood, anxiety, and daily functioning

  • Screening for co-occurring conditions such as depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), trauma-related disorders, or substance use disorders

  • Coordination with your primary care provider or other healthcare professionals when appropriate

Our goal is to develop an individualized treatment plan that addresses both your emotional and physical health needs.

Medication Management

While medication alone does not treat every eating disorder, it may help manage co-occurring conditions such as depression, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive symptoms. We carefully evaluate treatment options, monitor your progress, and adjust medications as needed.

Eating Disorder Treatment Options

Treatment is personalized based on your symptoms, medical needs, and recovery goals.

Therapy

Therapy is a key component of eating disorder treatment. Evidence-based approaches can help individuals:

  • Develop healthier eating behaviors

  • Improve body image

  • Reduce disordered thoughts about food and weight

  • Build healthy coping skills

  • Address underlying emotional concerns

  • Strengthen long-term recovery

If ongoing therapy or specialized eating disorder treatment is recommended, we can coordinate care with experienced therapists, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals.

Nutritional and Lifestyle Support

Recovery often includes collaboration with registered dietitians and other specialists to support:

  • Balanced nutrition

  • Healthy eating patterns

  • Physical health monitoring

  • Stress management

  • Healthy movement and exercise habits when appropriate

Eating Disorders Across the Lifespan

Adolescents

Eating disorders frequently develop during adolescence and can interfere with growth, development, academic performance, and emotional well-being. Early intervention is associated with better recovery outcomes.

Adults

Eating disorders can affect adults of all ages and backgrounds. Many individuals seek treatment after years of struggling with symptoms. Comprehensive care can improve physical health, emotional wellness, and quality of life.
